From squalor…to safety and financial security.
An 84-year-old Baltimore woman who had lost her husband a decade ago was living alone and beset with health issues. Isolated, she had no idea where to turn for help and as it turned out, was living in squalor.
“I was not getting any response to phone calls and letters and was appalled when I visited her house,” said Tricia Thomas, a partner at the CPA firm of Clifton Gunderson LLP and also the power of attorney for the woman. “There was filth, insect infestation, mounds of trash and paperwork in every room. I didn’t know where to start.”
Where Thomas started was with a call to Estate and Document Organizer, Mary Helen Dennis at InfoDoc, Inc. “She took care of everything,” Thomas noted. “I was desperate, and Mary Helen just waded in and worked through it.”
Dennis coordinated cleaners, exterminators, painters and other professionals to take on what seemed a daunting task: the cleaning alone took 92 hours. When she inspected the structure more problems emerged: broken plumbing, a leaky roof, broken windows — even an automobile that needed repair.
Dennis also organized all of the woman’s paperwork, located insurance policies and critical medical information, inventoried jewelry, furniture and other valuables, and even found un-cashed dividend checks. She was asked to liquidate the contents and coordinate the sale of the home, with the proceeds going to support the woman in an assisted living community.
“I don’t know what I would have done without Mary Helen,” said Thomas. “She finished a job that I wouldn’t even have known how to start and managed to do it with great efficiency.”
